Conroe Courier - Lenny's Sub Shop to open 80 local storesJuly 24, 2005
Lenny's Sub Shops has announced an agreement to open 80 new restaurants Montgomery, Harris and Fort Bend Counties.
Company Founder Len Moore and partner Tom Clatterbuck have acquired the franchise rights to the area. They plan to open 15 stores in the area and sell franchise rights to the remaining 65, said Christi Thoms, daughter of Moore and company executive.
Lenny's Sub Shop sells Philadelphia cheese steak sandwiches and hoagies.
"We're like going to Philadelphia without the airfare," Moore said.
The company's expansion includes a Conroe location that is anticipated to be on Texas 105 and open in February, Moore said.
He and his wife Sheila opened the original Lenny's Sub Shop in 1998 in a Memphis, Tenn., suburb. Franchising for the company began in 2001, and it is now known as Lenny's Franchisor LLC.
Moore lost majority ownership in the company in 2004 to current company CEO George Alvord and other private investors. He retains a small percentage of ownership in the company.
Since 2004, the company has granted more than 300 franchises in nine states.
The first location has opened in The Woodlands at 1500 Research Forest Drive Suite 190. The company will expand slowly from there, Thoms said.
Moore's family had resided in Houston before relocating to Memphis, she said. "The family was very familiar with this area."
The expectation is that the full expansion will take around eight years, Thoms said.
"The Houston area was chosen because we thought it was a large enough metropolitan area to handle a large number of stores, yet we could still be at home in our own beds at night," she said. "We've always considered Houston to be our second home," Moore said.
After selling the business, the family had a chance to live where it wanted to live, he said.
"Len's decision to expand as a Lenny's owner, operator and developer in the Houston area validates our concept," Alvord said. "For our company's founder to invest his time, energy and resources to extend our reach is a powerful testimonial to his belief in our brand and our stewardship."
"Most people sell a company then go out a buy a sailboat," Moore said.
The family considered starting over in Houston with another restaurant, he said.
"But then we had a family meeting and decided that we couldn't beat what we already had," Moore said.
He decided to sell Lenny's after 60 locations opened because it wasn't the "mom and pop" place he had anticipated, Thoms said.
"It's amazing how well the first location has been received," Moore said.
"I love Lenny's, and my family and I are very excited to have the opportunity to invest further in the future of this great company," he said.
The Woodlands location for Lenny's Subs can be reached at (281) 465-9080. Its hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
