"Hmmm?a foot-long hot dog," said I to myself on recently finding a Lenny's Sub Shop menu on the magazine's kitchen table. "I haven't had one of those in too long a time." Epic adventures have sprung from lesser inspirations?and so it came to pass that I sought lunch a few days ago, before the snow and sleet hit, at the Webster Groves Lenny's (8654 Big Bend Boulevard, 314.961.5959). Without too many complications, I located the eatery, just under a mile southwest of Webster University, and, as planned, ordered the grilled frank on wheat with cheese, onions (also grilled), diced tomatoes and hot-pepper relish ($4.25 plus tax). It filled both the bill and my belly and otherwise brightened a gray midwinter afternoon. That said, when next I visit Lenny's?and I will?I'll likely forgo the tomatoes and relish in favor of extra grilled onions. Incidentally, I forwarded a Lenny's menu to my parents, who independently assessed the South County shop (4129 Elm Park Drive, 314.487.7195). By phone this past weekend, Ma reported that both she and Pa quite enjoyed their visit there?so it appears Lenny's Sub Shop has earned the Hollerbach Family Seal of Approval.
