Memphis Business Journal - Lenny’s to open near U of M

August 21, 2006

Lenny's Franchisor LLC, the franchisor of Lenny's Sub Shops, is placing its 28th local franchise at a new development on Highland.

The Memphis-based Philadelphia-style sub shop will be the first tenant at 521 S. Highland, right next to the RP Billiards bar. The restaurant is slated to open Nov. 1.

Van Natta Properties LLC owns the 6,000-square-foot retail development, which has 51 parking spaces. The Gary Meyers Co. brokered the deal.

The new Lenny's, which will be owned by Memphis-area franchisees Marlin Harris and Edith Kelly-Green, will take up 2,500 square feet of the building's capstone. The two also own a Lenny's at the Memphis International Airport's Northwest terminal. Individually, Harris owns five other Lenny's in the Memphis area, while Kelly-Green owns a Lenny's in Oxford, Miss.

This Lenny's is one of the first signs of new retail development in the University of Memphis area. The Memphis and Shelby County Land Use Control Board recently approved plans for Poag & McEwen Lifestyle Centers' planned $45 million Shops at Highland University, a mixed-use concept which could bring 88,000 square feet of retail space to the area.

The very first Lenny's Sub Shop opened in Bartlett in 1998.
